My Powerbook

Some time ago I started with my first Apple, it was a 12" iBook with 500Mhz, the first "Icebook". I was really amazed what a nice machine it was, these days. After it, I bought a second 12" iBook, with 800Mhz and a 32Mb ATI Radeon 7500.

After these two iBooks I finally decided that I need something bigger from Apple, and I chose the 17" Powerbook, which has always been a dream of mine, since I saw it the first time at the livestream on the keynote.

The Hardware

  • G4 1.33 Ghz CPU
  • 1 Gb RAM (4 Gb would rock!)
  • ATI Radeon 9600 64 Mb VRAM
  • 80 Gb HDD
  • 802.11b/g WLAN (54 Mbit)
  • Bluetooth
  • Firewire 800
  • Firewire 400
  • USB 2.0
  • ambient light sensor
  • illuminated keyboard

GNU/Linux on this Powerbook

At first, when I got it, I tried to install both, GNU/Linux and Mac OS X on it, to have a dual boot machine. But I soon ran into problems with several pieces of the hardware, even suspend didn't work at that time. (WLAN, the ambient light sensor and the illuminated keyboard are still problems) So I decided to run only Mac OS X on it and check out if its possible for me to do all my daily work under Mac OS X.

Rationale

Well finally I can say, this is a really nice machine, and the best laptop I ever had. Its nice to work on it, and nowadays I even do several other things with Apple Software, like Keynote, iDVD, iMovie, iPhoto, iCal and of course iSync.
