things I stumbled upon when using debian on different archs
I want to mention a bit of the things which annoyed me and which pleased me when using Debian GNU/Linux on for example PowerPC, Sparc, Mips and so on.
"This software runs on Linux" - marketing stuff
I really hate this. Its a common way when commercial software vendors simply say XYZ runs on Linux, they indirectly mean it only runs on GNU/Linux X86! Wouldn't it be nice if some more (and not only IBM) would support for example GNU/Linux on PowerPC. Debian runs very nice on PowerPC hardware, IMHO it mostly runs even better than on X86, except some commercial software vendors.
But this is not only important for vendors, its also important for the user. If the user really would know that GNU/Linux on Architecture X is not the same as on X86. But well I guess the average user wouldn't even care.
Well this is one thing I like at java, it mostly works everywhere (where a JRE is) and with GCJ / GIJ things are getting even better. Perhaps this is even a point where C# can help, if its widely adopted. This does not mean that I like C# or that I like what M$ does.
Well, enough for now...
